DIY: Android Things Robotic Flower That Reacts To Facial Expressions
For the winter term, we decided to change the visual of the project into a flower and found The Expression Flower. The Expression Flower uses machine learning to identify facial expressions and mirror them, with colors and movement. Similar to Glitchi, colors and motion will express its emotions, but we add the engagement of communicating verbally with Glitchi, which The Expression Flower does not do.
Flower Robot
Robot Flower, is a YouTube video we found while searching for inspiration and designs for Glitchi. The Robot Flower uses infrared proximity sensors that open the petals when it senses a hand above the sensor. We were inspired by the design of this robot flower to create the design of Glitchi with the servos under the petals and the nut as the pistil of Glitchi.
Dance of the robotic flower
Robotic Flower, is a project we found on YouTube while searching for inspiration. This robotic flower was presented at the Maker Faire Paris in 2017 and received a blue ribbon of Maker of Merit. This flower inspired us to want to have Glitchi dance and move around and also bend. But we used a very heavy nut as the pistil and the servos are moving way too much, therefore bending it was too hard to do.
Arduino Robot Solar Tracker Flower
Arduino Robot Solar Tracker Flower, is a project found on YouTube that uses a stepper motor and a servo to pan tilt the sunflower to follow the light on the photoresistors. This is another idea we wanted to use with the pan and tilt servo, but that we did not follow due to the nut being really heavy and not having a stable base for Glitchi.
Zo (Bot)
Zo is an artificial chatbot that was developed by Microsoft in December 2016. It was designed similar to its previous chatbot successor Tay which was shut down 16 hours after its launch, due to posting offensive and racist tweets. Zo is the English version of Microsoft’s other successful chatbots Xiaoice (China) and Rinna (Japan).
Sophia the Robot and Jimmy Sing a Duet of “Say Something”
Some of the related works we found, are some robots on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”. On the show Jimmy introduces three robots, MIT’s Mini Cheetah from South Korea, a wearable tomato-feeding robot from Japan and Sophia from Hong Kong. MIT’s Mini Cheetah was developed to study the mobility and to later on be sent into dangerous locations. The Tomatan was created to feed tomatoes while running. Sophia was created to “seek intelligent living machines who care about people and improve our lives”.
Cozmo & Vector
Anki is a company based in the United States, it is a robotic and AI company that has built a few robots that are currently available for sale on the market. Anki Cozmo Robot, is one of their products that is relatable to Glitchi. Cozmo is a curious robot that likes to explore and learn. He is a “supercomputer” that is almost like a human. Cozmo also lets users learn to code and play games. Anki Vector Robot, is more of a useful robot, that has many different sensors and responds realistically. Vector can recognize people and objects, find his charger, navigate the space and avoid obstacles. Like Glitchi, Vector can see, hear, think, see and communicate. The main differences between Vector and Glitchi is that, Vector can move around, respond to commands, such as taking pictures, set timers, play blackjack and also connect with Alexa. Additionally, Anki’s robots also have similar concepts to Glitchi such as, emotion expressions, facial recognition and communication.
